The Edenderry Youth Action Group was established in 2008 by Kevin Farrell from the Acorn Project, and Gerry Collins from School Completion Edenderry. Both Kevin and Gerry saw that there was a huge lack of service and facilities for young people within the town of Edenderry. They felt that instead of providing these services, it would be more beneficial to the community to train young people to provide these services.
The Youth Action Group (YAG) provides services each year for younger people in the town, such as Santa's Grotto, Easter Egg Hunts, themed days and 'Fun Week'. In order to organise and run these, YAG take part in training, such as committee skills training and child protection training.
Each Year, Yag then pick a project that they would like to work with, such as 'Xhale' and 'The Irish Cancer Society' (most recent project that the group worked on this year). They had a two minute film to promote the danger of smoking. The group attended the awards that were held in Dublin, where they received 'The Judges Choice Award'.
Other projects they have taken part in were with 'Think Big' when they created positive posters to display in the schools throughout exam times, and they also created their own book called 'Our Town our Future'. This was a compilation of photographs of the town of Edenderry, which were all taken in the space of a single week. The aim was to show the variety of activities and positivity that can take place in our town throughout one week. YAG were also hugely instrumental in fundraising for the Astro Turf beside St. Joseph's Hall, and also the Youth Café.
The group itself changes every year when some of the member head off to college or work. We are always looking for new members to join. We aim YAG at those in transition year as it can help towards their 'Gaisce Award', and then 5th and 6th years of secondary school.
If you feel like your child would like to get involved with YAG, please contact Anna or Maura in the Acorn Project for more information.
